Physiotherapy during and after Pregnancy
Please find listed below some of the pregnancy related issues that your physiotherapist is able to help with during and after childbirth:
Abdominal Muscle Weakness
During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles are stretched and weakened. They may also separate down the midline. Abdominal muscle weakness results in poor muscle control and backache. Physiotherapists are trained to prescribe specific abdominal exercises to assist full recovery post partum.
Back/Neck pain & muscle soreness
The changes in your body due to the weight of a growing baby can lead to muscle soreness and joint problems. Your physiotherapist is able to help you overcome pain by teaching specific strengthening and stretching exercises, correcting posture and teaching self treatment massage.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The increase of fluid in your body during pregnancy may cause pins & needles and tingling in your fingers. You physiotherapist is able to help relieve these symptoms by teaching specific exercises, giving advice about minimising symptoms and if necessary providing the correct brace.
Fitness Classes (Pelvic floor awareness classes)
Exercise before, during and after pregnancy will assist a return to normal body shape, muscle tone and strength after the baby is born. Physiotherapists run low impact exercise classes specifically for pregnant women and new mothers.
Haemorrhoids
Haemorrhoids or piles are swelling and inflammation of the veins on cushions of tissue. These cushions are in the anal area and help to ease the passage of stool. During pregnancy, your body has more blood circulating through your veins. All your veins, especially those below your uterus, become dilated. There are 2 types of haemorrhoids; internal and external. It is possible to have both at the same time, and both types may protrude. Your physiotherapist is able to assist you with assessment, advice and treatment (ultrasound).
Incontinence and Prolapse
Pregnancy and childbirth often weaken the pelvic floor muscles increasing the risk of incontinence and prolapse. Your continence & women’s health physiotherapist can help prevent/reduce the problems associated with the weakening of the pelvic floor with expert assessment, treatment and instruction in self-help techniques.
Mastitis
Your physiotherapist will use ultrasound and massage to relieve the pain caused by blocked breast ducts and mastitis. Laser treatment is effective for management of cracked nipples. Education will be given regarding breastfeeding, care of nipples and self management strategies.
